Is Healthcare in Thailand of Good Quality?

Thailand, known for its beautiful landscapes, rich culture, and mouth-watering cuisine, has been gaining attention for its healthcare system. In this article, we will explore whether the healthcare in Thailand is of good quality, taking into account various factors such as affordability, accessibility, and the quality of medical professionals and facilities.

I can already tell you the quick answer from personal experience. I find the healthcare in Thailand to be much better than in most countries. And what’s more, it is very affordable. To give you a few examples:

  1. I lived in Hong Kong for 9 years. While the public healthcare was affordable, the waiting time for a small issue was hours if you went to a public hospital. Private healthcare is almost unaffordable unless you earn $10,000 a month. A dentist visit for a filling would set me back 2500HK$ (about $318).
  2. I am originally Austrian and while the healthcare there is great, it doesn’t come cheap. A trip to the dentist can set you back $400 for a cleaning or simple filling (comparably in Thailand this would cost $35).
  3. A trip to the Hospital in Sweden while I was there during COVID-19 (and contracted COVID-19) set me back €300. In the end they gave me paracetamol after letting me wait 4 hours. A quick trip to a private clinic for a flu or COVID symptoms in Chiang Mai (where I live) would cost $12.
  4.  I had a general checkup in Chiang Mai in 2022 after feeling chest pain and anxious for a few weeks. I went to a private hospital, did a EKG, X-Ray, Fitness Test on a treadmill while the doctor was monitoring me. 3 visits, medicine, all in set me back about 3500THB ($103).
  5. My good friends Mum needed a hip surgery. In Ireland where she is from she would have to wait 2 years, pay $20,000 and be stationed after surgery in a public room in the hospital with other people. She came to Chiang Mai (where her son / my friend) lives, made an appointment 2 weeks later, had a successful surgery from one of the top surgeons of the country and was placed in a private room including 2 weeks of rehabilitation for less than $5,000.
I have a few more examples, but you get the idea. With this out of the way, lets look at some facts:

1. Overview of the Thai Healthcare System

Thailand’s healthcare system is a combination of public and private institutions, striving to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to its citizens and visitors alike. In 2002, the country introduced the Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS), which aimed to provide access to essential healthcare services for all citizens, regardless of their financial capabilities.

2. Public Healthcare

The public healthcare system in Thailand is primarily funded by the government through taxes and the UCS. The public healthcare system offers a range of services, including primary care, specialist consultations, and hospitalization.

Pros of Public Healthcare

  • Accessible to all Thai citizens under UCS
  • Government-funded
  • Availability of a wide range of services

Cons of Public Healthcare

  • Overcrowded facilities
  • Longer wait times
  • Limited English-speaking staff

3. Private Healthcare

Private healthcare facilities in Thailand are known for their high-quality services, modern facilities, and English-speaking medical professionals. These facilities cater to both local and international patients, often providing luxurious amenities and personalized care.

Thailand is home to numerous world-class medical facilities, particularly in the private healthcare sector. 10. Alternative Medicine in Thailand

Thailand’s rich cultural heritage extends to the field of alternative medicine, offering traditional and holistic healing methods. Thai herbal medicine is another popular alternative healthcare option, utilizing natural remedies derived from local plants and herbs to address various ailments.

11. Health Insurance for Expats and Visitors

Expats and visitors to Thailand should consider obtaining health insurance to ensure access to quality healthcare during their stay. International health insurance plans offer comprehensive coverage for a wide range of medical services, including private healthcare facilities, and can often be tailored to individual needs. It is essential to research and compare various insurance options before settling on a plan that best suits one’s requirements and budget.

Personally I am an expat and I have no health insurance from a Thai company. I use Safetywing for years already who are very affordable and more than what I need. Check them out here.

12. Conclusion

In conclusion, the healthcare system in Thailand is of good quality, particularly in the private sector. The country’s public healthcare system, though not as luxurious, still offers essential services to its citizens. The affordability of healthcare, coupled with the high quality of medical professionals and facilities, makes Thailand an attractive destination for medical tourists. While there may be some challenges, such as language barriers in public healthcare institutions, the overall quality of healthcare in Thailand is commendable.
